Things to do in Gdansk
Gdansk's Main Town looks medieval but was around 90% rubble by 1945; the gabled facades along Dlugi Targ and the Motlawa waterfront are postwar reconstruction, not original fabric.
Anchor a first visit here: the Neptune Fountain and Dwor Artusa on Dlugi Targ, the wooden Zuraw crane gate on the river, and St Mary's Basilica, where the tower climb is roughly 400 steps with no lift. Mariacka street sells amber, which is fossilised tree resin gathered from the beach or dredged offshore, not a mined gemstone.
Beyond the Main Town, the Shipyard and Westerplatte cover Solidarity and 1939, and Oliwa's cathedral and park sit a short SKM ride away. Gdansk itself holds around 470,000 people at the centre of the wider Tricity.
