Visiting the Stutthof Memorial, Sztutowo

Stutthof, near the village of Sztutowo about 55 kilometres from Gdansk, was a German Nazi concentration camp opened on 2 September 1939, the first such camp established outside Germany's own pre-1937 borders. It was built and run by Nazi Germany on occupied Polish territory, never a Polish camp, and it should not be described as one.

Entry to the memorial is free, and opening hours run roughly 8:00 to 18:00 in the summer half of the year, shorter in winter. A self-guided visit takes about two hours, longer with a guide, and the site recommends a minimum visitor age of 13.

This is a place of memory and mourning, not a sightseeing stop, and it asks for a slow, quiet, respectful pace rather than a quick look on the way to somewhere else.
